Sometimes with momentum upwards, but then also quickly downwards again - a solid recovery looks different. Investors therefore remain cautious. When they do buy, it is mainly ETFs with shares from the USA or worldwide.
28 June 2022. Frankfurt (Börse Frankfurt). Fears of a recession continue to weigh on the markets. Although the DAX has stabilized somewhat after the quite substantial losses in the previous weeks. At midday on Tuesday, the index was at 13,284 points - above yesterday's level and roughly at the same level as a week ago. However, uncertainty remains high. Frank Mohr of Société Générale reports a sales overhang in ETF trading - with slightly lower turnover. "Investors are currently orienting themselves as to where the journey is heading."
Energy stocks: profit-taking and repositioning.
The oil and gas price explosion continues to be an important topic. As a result, the energy sector remains one of the most closely watched sectors. However, as Mohr notes, products such as iShares Oil & Gas Exploration & Production (IE00B6R51Z18) are currently tending to be sold. "This is probably profit-taking after the previously very good price performance."
Fabian Wörndl of Lang & Schwarz, on the other hand, is still seeing a lot of buying in the iShares product. "There is really a lot going on in energy stocks." The oil price is still well below the March high of 133 U.S. dollars for a barrel of Brent, but has recently risen again somewhat to currently 112 U.S. dollars.
Top performers: all from the energy sector
Morningstar reports that 14 of the 15 top-performing ETFs registered in Germany in May were based in the energy sector. Top performers included iShares Oil & Gas Exploration & Production, Energy S&P US Select Sector ETFs from Invesco, SPDR and iShares, and Xtrackers MSCI USA Energy. ETCs such as the WisdomTree Gasoline ETC are also included. All were up between 13 and 19 percent on a monthly basis, and up about 100 percent on an annual basis. Crypto products dominated Morningstar's list of top losers. 14 of the 15 biggest losers in the German market belong to the crypto segment.
Healthcare companies in demand, gold producers not
According to Mohr, equities from the healthcare sector remain in demand, for example with the iShares MSCI World Health Care Sector (IE00BJ5JNZ06). Real estate stocks are also popular, for example with the iShares Developed Markets Property Yield (IE00B1FZS350). Disposals predominate in the basic materials sector, especially in gold producers (<LU0488317701>, IE00B6R52036), according to Mohr. Gold has been hovering around $1,820 for weeks after hitting an all-time high of $2,069 in March.
"European equities not an issue at the moment"
As far as broad-based equity ETFs are concerned, U.S. and world indices are once again in the spotlight. "They each account for one-third of our turnover, European equities only 8 percent," Mohr specifies. In the case of S&P ETFs, purchases and sales were in balance (IE00B3ZW0K18, IE00B3XXRP09, IE00B3YCGJ38). Mohr says the iShares Core MSCI World (IE00B4L5Y983) is doing well. "European equities are not an issue right now."

Fabian Wörndl also sees U.S. and global equities in the investors' favor. The Xtrackers S&P 500 (LU0490618542) often ends up in portfolios. In addition, he said, concerns about Italy have grown, and he reports higher turnover in Italian stocks with a tendency toward declines. "Chinese stocks, on the other hand, are more sought after again," the trader notes, referring to the Lyxor MSCI China ESG Leaders Extra (LU1900068914). The ETF has recently recovered clearly and comes to only a small minus of 1.5 percent since the beginning of the year. Other ETFs tracking Chinese equities are also recovering, such as the iShares MSCI China (IE00BQT3WG13).
With equity market volatility still high, Lang & Schwarz clients are also trading volatility ETNs such as WisdomTree S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures 2.25x Daily Leveraged (<IE00BLRPRH06>). "That serves as a hedge and is sometimes bought, sometimes sold," Wörndl explains.
Europe's government bonds? Yes, gladly
Société Générale clients are also betting on European government bonds, for example with Amundi Prime Euro Govies (LU2089238898) or Lyxor Euro Government Bond (<LU1650490474>). In corporate bond trading, on the other hand, no clear picture can be discerned, according to Mohr.
