Europe's stock markets are not doing badly at all compared to the USA - on the contrary. Investors are positioning themselves accordingly. Quality and high-dividend stocks remain popular. The Bitcoin recovery is also attracting investors to crypto ETNs.
14 February 2023. Frankfurt (Börse Frankfurt). The buying mood in the ETF business continues. "Although it was the worst week of the year so far in the equity markets, we recorded around 60 percent more purchases than sales in our major ETFs," reports Holger Heinrich from Baader Bank. ESG products continued to be in particularly high demand, he said. "In addition, interest in quality and equity securities continues unabated."
Torben Bendt of Lang & Schwarz reports a conspicuous amount of buying for European equities - and good turnover overall. "Trading volume is much higher than two or three weeks ago." At midday Tuesday, the DAX is at 15,435 points, up 9.7 percent since the start of the year. The S&P 500 is up 8.2 percent this year.
Popular: "ESG Leaders" and "ESG Elite
According to Heinrich, the focus in U.S. equities is on sustainable index products. The SPDR S&P 500 ESG Leaders (IE00BH4GPZ28) and the UBS S&P 500 ESG (IE00BHXMHL11), for example, ended up in the portfolios. He also observes inflows for the SPDR S&P US Dividend Aristocrats ESG (IE00BYTH5R14) and the UBS S&P Dividend Aristocrats ESG Elite (IE00BMP3HG27). The latter two track high-dividend U.S. stocks that also do well from a sustainability perspective. Since the beginning of the year, however, the SPDR ETF has only gained a small 1 percent, while the UBS ETF has gained 5 percent.
Focus on quality
As for European equities, Lang & Schwarz is looking for the Lyxor Core Stoxx Europe 600 (LU0908500753), for example. "We are seeing a lot more inflows into European equities than usual, including products from other providers," explains Bendt. Heinrich reports buying for classic Stoxx Europe and Euro Stoxx trackers from iShares (IE0008470928) and Amundi (LU1681047319), as well as versions with sustainability filters such as iShares MSCI EMU ESG Screened (IE00BFNM3B99). "Also in demand are quality (IE00BYSX4176) and - again - dividend stocks (IE00BF2B0L69, LU0292095535)." Dealers report no abnormalities for the bond ETF business.
Most traded ETFs on Xetra in January were, on the equity side, the classic iShares trackers ("Core") on DAX, MSCI World and MSCI Europe (DE0005933931, IE00B4L5Y983, IE00B1YZSC51). On the bond side, the iShares Core Euro Government Bond (IE00B4WXJJ64), iShares Euro Corporate Bond Large Cap (IE0032523478), and iShares Euro Corporate Bond 0-3yr ESG (IE00BYZTVV78) had the highest turnover. These track European government bonds, European large cap corporate bonds and short-dated European corporate bonds with ESG filters.
More activity in gold and silver ETCs
Interest in gold and silver ETCs has risen significantly again, according to Bendt. "We have been observing that for about two weeks." As examples, he cites WisdomTree Physical Silver (JE00B1VS3333), which tracks the silver price, and WisdomTree Gold 3x Daily Leveraged (IE00B8HGT870), which tracks the gold price with leverage three. Gold and silver prices have fallen recently after a previously strong rise, with gold down from $1,953 to $1,863 and silver down from just under $24 to under $22.
Crypto ETNs: Top instead of flop
Trading in crypto ETNs has also picked up. The background is the price recovery: the bitcoin price has risen by 31 percent this year to currently 21,743 U.S. dollars, although still far from the all-time high at almost 69,000 U.S. dollars. Lang & Schwarz's Bendt reports good turnover for VanEck Bitcoin (DE000A28M8D0) and WisdomTree Ethereum (GB00BJYDH394), as well as VanEck Solana (DE000A3GSUD3) and 21Shares Polygon (CH1129538448).
As Morningstar reports, crypto and natural gas continued to dominate the monthly performance of exchange traded funds in January. Crypto ETNs, which had often topped the list of biggest flops before, were among the top performers last month. Solana ETNs in particular did very well, such as those from WisdomTree (GB00BNGJ9G01), up 148 percent. Natural gas ETCs, on the other hand, were among the biggest losers in January, and palladium ETCs also slid deeply into negative territory. In the ETF space, iShares MSCI China Tech (IE000NFR7C63) led the way, while the top loser was HSBC MSCI Turkey (<IE00B5BRQB73>).
